New Ski Performance Scotland Course

We now have an extra midweek course on 12/13th March. There are currently 4 laces left on this course. The course on 8/9 March is now full but there are still places next weekend on 1/2 March. Despite the current thaw there is loads of snow still neary to the top of the lift towers so plenty of potentailly excellant skiing when the weather calms. Awesome conditions at Nevis Range

After a weekend of winter skills for Glenmore Lodge at the weekend, this week is being spent teaching skiing at Nevis Range. The snow cover is superb, you can ski anywhere. Its busy but there is plenty snow for everyone and queues no more than 10 mins at worst. The sun has been shining with great views.

Geal Charn

Today was my last chance for a tour for a few days so thought I best get out. I also needed to train for skimo so this fitted the bill. There are 30 entries in the glencoe race just now with some top athletes and many others to enjoy the race, only three girls though, so come on girls there are 3 prizes so the chances are good! Today south facing seemed the way to go and was on the east so went for Geal Charn (monadhliath) from just beyond laggan. A very short carry, the usual heathery first section. Took the slightly longer ridge line round for the ascent then descended the south side. Firm snow on the descent provided lovely safe skiing. Potos not great as it was just me to take them. I will be running a winter skills course at Glenmore Lodge this weekend then teaching skiing for half term week. The next Ski Performance Scotland course is 1st March and still has spaces.

Chno Dearg

Yesterday Brian and I went for a tour up Chno Dearg from Fersit, We had some wild weather and poor vis making it necessary to ski the first bit of the descent on a compass bearing, lower down the skiing was good though. We skiied all the way back to the track at 290m the final section needed some scottish style heather skiing. There was significant windslab about so we stuck to easy angled slopes. Im hoping to get out again either tomorrow or more likely near Dumochter on Friday. With a high avalanche forecast on some aspects careful route choice will be essential.

Ski Performance Scotland Course

This weekend I was running the first Ski Performance Scotand course for Off Piste Performance. On Sat with Nevis Range and Cairngom shut we headed to the Lecht. The Buzzard provided ideal terrain and the guys were so focused on their skiing they didnt seem to notice the wild weather. On Sun with an equally wild forecast we headed back to the Lecht, this time we found some new snow off piste to practice on and the sun even made an appearance. The guys left with extra confidence and lots of new ideas to go away and practice.

We now have an extra course on 1/2 March and would consider a March midweek course if any dates are requested.

wild week but lots of snow

The last week has been wild but with odd spells of good conditions if you were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

 Last saturday I was at glenshee for the skimo race, after a morning of heavy rain the weather cleared to allow a great race, we could see enough to see that there is a lot of snow close to Glas Maol. We raced up Carn Asoda, down bucharts up to the top of and down the Tiger, I won the womens race in 44mins,

On Monday and Tuesday I was working for Glenmore Lodge with John and Louisa who were preparing for skiing the Haute Route. On monday they battled the weather very well to learn about some kit, some skinning skills and some basic axe and crampon use. On Tuesday we headed to Drumochter, and had a ski up A Bhuidheanach Bheag, we were treated with some views and grabbed a quick extra descent with nice turns, we descended the easiest angle gully back to the road, care was needed with slope selection and nothing steep was an option but it made a good day, the weather closed in at the end but we had had a good day by then an no walking required,

Wednesday we drove to the carpark for Ben a Choarainn but turned around as it was pretty wet and windy, you cant win them all!

Thursday was the day to be out, Nevis range and fantastic wind packed snow all over the front face of the mountain, you could pick any route between the goose and warrens lift and it was all great skiing. Over the back was scoured with sastrugi but there was no need to go there with the front of the mountain so good. Prob as much snow as I have ever seen at Nevis Range. It was good to see so many skiers make the most of the break in the weather,

Unfortunately back to the storms for now, but there is loads of snow when the weather finally gives in, till then take care, there is a lot of snow with a lot of unstable layers in it, when it finally stabalises there will be some superb off piste skiing, patience required. Unfortunately we have had to postpone the Ski Performance Scotland course this weekend. Some nice turns at Drumochter

Its back to Scottish skiing for me. There is lots of snow on the west coast of scotland. At nevis range the goose gully is full and provides excellant skiing, the picture is of 2 days ago while the lift was being repaired and skinned up and had the decscent to ourselves. The lift is now open with summit to follow. When the snow stabalises and avalanche risk lowers there should be loads of snow in the back corries.There is also good snow cover on most hills down to about 550m so plenty of scope for touring, just some carefull route choice will be required. On the 28th i paid a visit to the lecht for the skimo race. There is less snow the further east you go but there was enough for a race. After a month of dowhill racing the uphill was hard work but i was pleased to finish third behind Ruthie Blackshaw and Elidh Wardlaw, Ben Tibbetts won the mens race. Thanks to Mountain spirit for some great prizes and to odlo for a suprise spot prize.
